As autumn ticks along, Federated is ready to help prepare your fields for next spring with custom services to boost your ROI on crop inputs.

Karson Schoening, ag sales rep at Federated’s Ogilvie location, said, “If you’re reviewing your budget and wondering where to start … soil sampling is the logical first step.
  • Assess which fields already have updated samples and identify those that need new sampling (soil tests should be done every 2-4 years).
  • With current soil data in hand, you can make informed decisions about what crop inputs each field requires—and how much to apply.
When you start with soil sampling, you ensure that every dollar spent goes toward what your fields actually need, not what you think they need.

Ag lime is the next consideration for your budget. The correct pH gives crops a boost. When you apply ag lime in the fall, you create the best environment for plant growth next year.
  • Proper pH helps plant absorb essential nutrients.
  • Proper pH improves overall soil health – which can improve yields.
Fall fertilizer – especially in a year where there’s still time before the ground is frozen (though that window closes quickly) – is a “big opportunity to finish up the 2025 growing season,” said Schoening. Consider:
  • P and K both need time to become plant available.
  • Fall fertilization saves time overall during the busy spring – lighten the workload!
Karson added, “[Fall fertilizer] is especially important on your fields that are going to be planted into soybeans in the next growing season. If you spread fertilizer in the fall you can go straight into planting your soybeans in the spring.”
